ERASMUS EXPERIENCE IN PULA

  AUTHOR: Susana Fernandez Alvarez

Introduction
Located on the Adriatic coast, Pula is a historic gem that captivates with its ancient charm and vibrant Mediterranean atmosphere. Upon arriving in Pula, I was impressed by its rich Roman heritage, which is evident in its famous amphitheater, the Pula Arena, one of the best preserved in the world. Walking through its cobblestone streets is like traveling back in time, as you discover Roman ruins, triumphal arches and ancient walls that bear witness to its glorious past. However, Pula is much more than ancient history. The city bustles with life thanks to its lively student and cultural atmosphere. The cafes and bars in the historic center offer the perfect place to enjoy local cuisine and socialize with international friends. In addition, the adjacent coast offers spectacular beaches where you can relax and enjoy the Croatian sun. As an Erasmus student, I have had the opportunity to immerse myself in university life at the University of Pula, where I have met people from all over the world and expanded my academic and cultural horizons. The city offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, from excursions to natural parks to cultural events and festivals that enrich the student experience.

First months in Croatia
I arrived in Pula on September 27th, 2023, and since then, my classmates and I have experienced thousands of adventures both in Croatia and throughout the rest of Europe. It is worth noting that Pula is a highly seasonal city in terms of tourism, and our arrival coincided with the end of the season. As a result, we were able to live the best experiences such as huge festivals at Fort Punta Christo, the best excursions along the Adriatic, and the liveliest atmosphere in the city center. Our first trip, or rather experience, in Croatia was a boat excursion along the coast of Pula, where we enjoyed a spectacular dinner, an open bar party with a DJ, and also had the opportunity to see dolphins against an incredible sunset backdrop. It was one of the best boat experiences we had in Pula. Additionally, since it was at the beginning of our Erasmus journey, it allowed us to get to know each other, exchange cultures… After that, we decided to embark on a road trip through Croatia, during which we visited Rijeka, Zadar, Trogir, Split, Plitvice Lakes, and Krka Lakes.During this trip, we experienced a lot of adventures, and we were able to immerse ourselves in the most traditional part of Croatia. Discovering all these towns, we fell in love with Croatia, its culture, its history, its gastronomy, and its nature. The conclusions I've drawn from these trips around Croatia are that Croatia has incredible landscapes and nature, its cuisine is very traditional and delicious, and they take great care of their natural landscapes. Our second trip consisted of visiting Split and Dubrovnik. Both places are spectacular, but honestly, Dubrovnik captured my heart. The history within its walls, its unmatched architecture, and of course, all the stairs and hidden corners it holds.
