ERASMUS EXPERIENCE ON THE CROATIAN COASTLINE: EXPLORING PULA AND SPLIT

AUTHOR: Guilherme Virissimo

My experience in Pula has been amazing and, honestly, it exceeded all my expectations. The city has a unique energy, with a perfect mix of history, culture, and a slower pace of life, something very different from what I’m used to.

The first thing that caught my attention was the architecture. Walking through the streets of Pula feels like traveling back in time. The Roman Amphitheatre is absolutely stunning, not just because of its size, but also because of how seamlessly it blends into the city’s daily life. It’s surreal to think that such an ancient monument remains such a vibrant part of modern life, hosting events and welcoming visitors. Another remarkable aspect is the lifestyle here. People seem to live life at a more relaxed pace, truly enjoying the simple moments. I found myself admiring this approach, where a pause for coffee by the sea or a leisurely walk through the narrow streets becomes an essential part of the day. What also captivated me was the city’s connection to the sea. The crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches, and small hidden coves are absolutely breathtaking. It’s not just the natural beauty that enchants, but also the sense of peace that comes from being so close to the water.

Pula has taught me to slow down, appreciate the little details, and immerse myself in the history and nature of a place. I’m so grateful for every moment I’ve spent here, and this experience will undoubtedly remain a cherished memory forever.

My short trip to Split was simply unforgettable. Despite having little time, I managed to enjoy the essence of this vibrant and historic city, which quickly won me over.

The heart of my experience was Diocletian’s Palace. Walking through its corridors and squares felt like diving into history, with the ancient Roman walls now seamlessly integrated into modern life. Restaurants, shops, and cafés are scattered throughout the palace, creating a magical and unique atmosphere. In addition, the waterfront, known as Riva, was one of my favorite spots. Strolling along this promenade, with stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and surrounded by palm trees, was as relaxing as it was invigorating. Sitting at one of the outdoor cafés, feeling the sea breeze, was a moment of pure peace. Even with limited time, I managed to take a brief hike up Mount Marjan, where you get an incredible panoramic view of the city and the sea. It’s the perfect place to slow down and appreciate the natural beauty surrounding Split.
