HUM: THE CHARM OF THE WORLD`S SMALLEST TOWN
AUTHOR: Matilde S. Araújo
Imagine a town so small that you can cross it in less than five minutes, yet so rich in history that every stone seems to tell an ancient secret. That’s Hum, in Croatia, a place that redefines the meaning of simplicity and authenticity. Reaching it feels like stepping into a portal to another time, where just 30 inhabitants keep the essence of a medieval town alive, surrounded by lush hills and postcard-perfect vineyards.
On October 16th, my friends and I decided to explore this hidden gem in the Istria region. It was a long walk to get there, but every step was worth it. Along the way, we were greeted by stunning landscapes: olive fields, hills lined with cypress trees, and a peaceful silence that made us feel disconnected from the modern world.
Hum is not just a tourist destination; it’s a journey through time. The town’s history dates back to the 11th century, and every preserved detail tells a piece of that past. As we walked through its medieval gates, we were greeted by stone walls that once served as protection against invaders. Inside the town, we found a charming simplicity: a small square, a church with a bell tower dominating the landscape, and stone houses adorned with colorful flower boxes.
Along the way, we made several stops to take photos and soak in the special atmosphere of the place.
After exploring Hum, we headed to one of the local taverns to try the famous biska, a traditional brandy made from mistletoe and aromatic herbs and much more other drinks, with its unique flavor, was the perfect pairing for the typical gastronomy, such as cured meats and fresh truffles – a specialty of Istria. Sitting with my friends, we laughed and reminisced about the effort to get there, which turned out to be more than rewarding.
Hum may be small in size, but its essence is grand. The feeling of walking through its streets, talking to the few residents, and simply soaking in the tranquility is something hard to put into words. The town invited us to slow down, disconnect from modern distractions, and appreciate the little things in life.
Visiting Hum on October 16th was an experience that will stay with us forever. The smallest town in the world showed us that it’s not the size of a place that defines it, but the richness of its history, culture, and authenticity. If you’re planning a trip to Croatia, make sure to set aside time to visit Hum. Whether with friends or on your own, the journey there will be just as special as the destination itself.
